On Sept. 13, IBM introduced the computer hard drive. It consisted of 50 disks, each 24 inches in diameter. All told, they stored five megabytes of data. Complementing the advent of the drive was the first conference on artificial intelligence, a phrase that became part of the language that year, said Mitch Marcus, computer science professor at Penn.
