Earth Science Picture of the Day for August 23, 2006
I took this photo at the trailing edge of a passing thunderstorm from Rancho Santa Margarita, California on July 22, 2006. I was actually hoping to get a good lightning picture and was dumbfounded by this surreal and discordant sunset -- one of the strangest I've ever seen. Sunlight was reflecting off of the falling rain as well as the clouds in front of the storm, leaving a sharp dividing line between the red and blue/purple hues.
