Today I went to doctor for my annual checkup. Unlike President Bush I did not put on unwanted pounds, because I ate too much birthday cake. In fact, I have eaten very little birthday cake which is part of the reason why Haley's cake is either still in the fridge or in the trash.
After getting a thorough once over by the doctor, the nurse came in to draw blood. However, before she stuck the needle in I remembered that if you cough before an injection it lessens the pain. In fact when I coughed, and it was not even a loud or hard cough, I felt no pain. According to Taras Usichenko, author of a study on the phenomenon, this trick causes a sudden, temporary rise in pressure in the chest and spinal canal, inhibiting the pain-conducting structures of the spinal cord. I am sure everyone can use this except for David, because he loves shots and in no way wants to diminish any part of the shot getting ritual.
