Taxi! Taxi!

Many parents have been heard to complain that their offspring treat them as a taxi service.

Now they have the research to back them up.

Parents drive on average 1,664 miles a year chauffeuring their children - slightly longer than the journey from London to Istanbul.

This is at a cost of nearly £3,000 - with a total travel time of six and a half days, says the survey by AA Insurance published today.

The survey of 1,237 parents found that the school run was not the main cause of clocking up the miles but rather children's busy social lives.

Requests for a lift were due to a variety of reasons, encompassing visits to friends' houses, sports activities and trips to shopping centres.

One in five parents was found to clock up 2,100 miles per year ferrying around their children - and those of other parents.
