Intern In Charge of Police in Clevland

A 21-year-old who arrived at Lorain City Hall last month as a college intern is now overseeing the police department and services such as snow plowing.

Heidelberg College political science major Andy Winemiller has been promoted to Service and Safety Director by mayor John Romoser.

Romoser says his first two choices said “no” to what's likely to be a temporary appointment, and he adds that those who've met Winemiller have not objected. Romoser lost his bid for re-election Tuesday.

Mayor-elect Tony Krasienko says he'll name a new Safety-Service Director in January and is looking for someone with government or business experience.

For now, Winemiller has the job and its $7,500 a month salary, a big step up from his $7.50 an hour intern's pay.
