November is Peanut Butter Lover's Month

  • Did you know that peanut butter is a good source of protein. Protein is necessary for growth and maintenance of body structures. Bones, muscles, skins, and other solid parts of the body are made up largely of proteins. They provide energy and make up about 12 to 15 percent of the diet's calories. Animal proteins are found in cheese, eggs, fish, meats and milk. Vegetable proteins are found in beans, grains, nuts (peanuts) and vegetables.

  • Peanut butter is a staple in 85% of American homes. We eat about 3 pounds of peanut butter per person each year. That is a total of 700 million pounds!

  • Astronaut Allen B. Sheppard took a peanut to the moon.

  • Two peanut farmers have been elected president of the United States: Thomas Jefferson and Jimmy Carter.

  • Peanut shells are used to make kitty litter, fireplace logs, animal feed, and fuel for power plants.

  • Consumers prefer creamy to crunchy by a 60% to 40% ratio. Children and women prefer creamy; men like the crunchy stuff.

  • The world's largest PB&J sandwich, created November 6, 1993 in Peanut, Pennsylvania, was 40 feet long and consisted of 150 pounds of peanut butter and 50 pounds of jelly.

  • The average American child will eat 1500 PB&J sandwiches by the time she or he graduates from high school.
